Christmas lights switch on - 21 November 04
To celebrate panto season, from 13:30 - 16:30 there will be a pantomime horse Grand National in Edgbaston Street with the added obstacles of fences and water features in the final race. Each canal boat will feature a musical element with bands, performers and entertainers on board to play to the public who will be viewing from the towpaths and vantage points.
The 21 November will also see the opening of Santa’s Christmas Grotto and will be continuing throughout December until Christmas Eve. Visitors to Santa will travel to the grotto on a land train commencing from Centenary Square, take in the sights of the city, until its destination in Chamberlain Square. 750 lit up Christmas trees will surround the grotto giving a magical forest setting. Each person will receive a gift of Cadbury’s chocolate and there will be a mince pie and hot drink for everybody when they leave.
To round off the day of events, Millennium Point will play host to a Christmas Concert (from 17:00) and fireworks display, with the Christmas Lights switched on at 19:00. Flutter fetty cannons, space beams, search lights and stage lighting will accompany pyrotechnics to produce an amazing spectacle. Frankfurt Christmas Market
Following last year’s success the Frankfurt Christmas Market is back in Birmingham from November 18th to December 22nd. With over 65 stalls the market is the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria with stalls filling Victoria Square and the upper part of New Street. The popular children’s carousel will also be back in front of the Council House.
This year a new bakery on Victoria Square will be adding its own tempting smells to those of the surrounding mulled wine, marzipan and sausage stalls by baking a range of traditional German breads and pastries fresh each day. The German beer stall has been expanded to offer extra seating for visitors to warm themselves in the glow of the newly added wood-burning open fire.
The market offers a range of unusual and handmade gifts including ceramics, candles, glasswork, jewellery and Christmas decorations. A number of stalls also feature traditional items such as wooden toys, nativity scenes and marionettes. New products on offer for the first time include hand crafted wicker baskets; traditional German shaped baking tins and biscuit cutters complete with Christmas recipes to try out at home and build-your-own lampshades. One new stall presents a dizzying array of natural brushes which must be seen to be appreciated.
