Lincoln’s world famous Christmas Market

Lincoln‘s Christmas Market is based on an idea from Lincoln‘s German twin town of Neustadt an der Weinstraße.

Over 20 years ago, a small group of Councillors from Lincoln were visiting Neustadt just prior to Christmas time, and were taken with the few stalls and a children‘s ride in their traditional town square. It wasn't a lot to get excited about, but it did create a little piece of Christmas magic, and the idea of transferring its potential to Lincoln was seized upon.

Picturesque Setting

Castle Square in Lincoln was chosen as the ideal location, with the back drop of Lincoln Cathedral and Castle providing a picturesque setting, which “not even Walt Disney could create”.

Humble Beginnings .....

So it was that in December 1982, the first Lincoln Christmas Market was staged, with 14 stalls, a couple of local bands and choirs, a few hundred local families with their friends and relatives, and a smattering of tourists from away.

Humble beginnings, but the event was a major success, and over the next 25 years the Christmas Market grew....and grew.... until this year in 2007, we will welcome some 320 stalls and over 150,000 visitors.

International Acclaim

Lincoln now boasts the biggest Christmas Market in Europe. It is internationally acclaimed, has won several major tourism awards and is much copied by other cities across the UK. After Lincoln Cathedral, it is probably Lincoln's biggest claim to fame. Given that the Cathedral has been around for over 900 years, whilst the Market has been here just 25 years, that is quite an achievement.

The Place to be at Christmas

Xmas Mkt Fir ConesLincoln Christmas Market had three main objectives back in 1982. To celebrate our twinning with Neustadt. To raise Lincoln's profile as a tourist destination. And to give local people a pleasant introduction to the festive season. Twenty-three years on it is still achieving the same three objectives, and Lincoln is the place to be at Christmas time.
